Allie couldn’t take a deep breath until the door was shut and locked and he was on the opposite side. She leaned against it, willing her heart to calm itself. Was he already in his truck? She waited for its engine to roar to life, but jumped at a soft bump against the door’s exterior.

He called out to her. “Like me baring my soul to three people tonight wasn’t personal?”

Oh God, he’s still out there. “I never said it wasn’t. I only said I’m not ready for that.”

Something brushed his side of the door, sliding down the side. When he spoke again, his voice sounded from near the lower portion, closer to the porch surface.

“Allie, don’t push me away.”

She closed her eyes, slid to the floor, before resting her head against the thick wood panel. “Stop doing this to me, Clay. Stop making me feel bad about not wanting to bare every little part of myself to someone else’s eyes.”

“You mean emotional, like baring the soul, or physical?”

“Both, I guess, but mostly on a physical level.”

“Are you still worried about that?”

“It’s a big part of it, yes.” His chuckle sounded from the opposite side, grating on her nerves. “Can I say how comforting it is that you find humor in this situation?” Her tone roiled with cynicism. I sure as hell can’t.

“I’m not laughing at you. I’m just thinking I need to work on my skills.”

Surely, he can’t think . . . Ah, hell no, hadn’t the man suffered through enough for one night? She took a deep breath. “Clay?”

“Yes?”

“If you’re wondering whether your mission to make me want you is succeeding, just stop.”

“Why?”

“Because it is, I do, I want you.” She left the rest unsaid. I want to do things with you, and to you. I think about you all the time. She waited through his prolonged pause.

“I’m sensing a but in the works . . .”

“But that doesn’t change the facts. I’m not comfortable with my body.” And I have no idea how to please a man in bed.

“There’s nothing wrong with your body.”

“You haven’t seen it.”

“I’ve seen enough of it to know that I find every inch of you desirable.”

“You can’t possibly know that until you’ve seen every inch of it. Besides, I’ve seen your tall, willowy ex, remember? I’m nothing like her.”

“Thank God for that.”

“You know what I mean.”

“So do you. If you think I’ll be comparing you to her in bed, you’re wrong. So wrong, it’s laughable. Do you think I could ever again be attracted to a woman who’s done what she’s done?”

“I guess not.”

“Damn straight.” He paused. “You know, earlier, when I had her on the phone, I nearly couldn’t say what I had to say. I struggled to complete it because it hurt so bad to talk about it, to come out and admit some of the things I wanted to tell her.”

Allie turned so that her right side was up against the door. She placed her left hand against the panel, hoping to give him some small bit of comfort.
